Hispanic Heritage Month is more than just an opportunity to celebrate the pride of being Hispanic. It’s a recognition of the enduring impact that Hispanic culture has had on the world. For many of us who have migrated to new lands, art becomes a vital link to our roots, helping us navigate the complexities of identity in a new environment. It speaks a language that transcends borders and connects us to the shared human experience.
Historically, the arts have always played a central role in the preservation and dissemination of culture. From the murals of Diego Rivera that depict the struggles and triumphs of the Mexican people to the literary works of Gabriel García Márquez that brought Latin American magic realism to the global stage, Hispanic artists have used their talents to tell stories that resonate across cultures and generations.
For over 50 years, the Bilingual Foundation of the Arts (BFA) has been committed to preserving and celebrating Hispanic culture through the arts. Founded in 1973, BFA has produced hundreds of plays that highlight the richness of Hispanic heritage, from classic texts to contemporary works that reflect the evolving identities of our community. Our dedication to the arts has created a space where the Hispanic community can come together, celebrate, and feel a deep sense of pride in our shared history.
Art has the incredible ability to unite us, especially during times of change and uncertainty. One of the shining examples of contemporary Hispanic theater is "Our Lady of the Tortilla" by Luis Santeiro, a play that beautifully captures the complexities and humor of family life within the Hispanic community. We are proud to present this play during Hispanic Heritage Month, with performances on September 27, 28, 29, and October 4, 5, 6. It’s a perfect opportunity to experience a piece that speaks directly to our shared experiences and reminds us of the strength and unity within our community.
As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, it’s essential to remember that our culture is rich with history, creativity, and resilience. From the classic texts of writers like Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz and Federico García Lorca to the contemporary works of today, like "Our Lady of the Tortilla," Hispanic culture has always been a source of inspiration and strength. At BFA, we are committed to continuing this legacy by bringing the best of Hispanic arts to our community.
We invite you to join us in celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month by attending "Our Lady of the Tortilla." Let’s come together to honor our heritage, share in the laughter and tears of this powerful play, and celebrate the vibrant culture that unites us all.
